The Day The Music Died? As If...

I remember a time sitting in busk's class, learning about Tin Pan Alley, Skiffle, and all that Jazz... We were learning about the sad day when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the big bopper, all died. It is a terrible day in music history. During this discussion, Busk -wait no, it was Ellen Carr- said something that got me thinking. She said (paraphrased) "This is the day that the music died". How could one day kill music? Sure you can say that they were the most popular, the most influencial, and coolest artists of their time. Are you serious though? look what came after them:

The Beatles
Led Zep
The Who
The Ramones
Pink Floyd
The Rolling Stones
The Doors
Julian Casablancas (The Strokes)
Radiohead
Ben Folds

Looking at this list, can you honestly tell me that music died? I know that, that saying is just a saying, but still, don't say music died...

  1. maybe music didn't die, but "the" music, the music of their time did.

  2. I don't even know why this is up for discussion! Music isn't alive! How could you kill it. That's like saying "the day the sound had a heart complication and keeled over!" Wait, is that even possible? NO! Freaking heck, I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my whole life...

  3. I'm with Erin on this one. Obviously after they all died music didn't just vanish, but it was the end of an era of rock and roll. The first era of rock and roll, actually. Also, I think Ellen was just quoting American Pie.

  4. four things:
1st. Pat, I love how you went from Erin to Ellen in the same paragraph, very tasteful.
2nd. Shea is right in my opinion, there is no way to kill music, and whoever said this saying is a moron.
3rd. The music of "their" time most certainly did not die that day. There were many other rock groups out there that shined during and after that fateful day. also it was not even close to the end of the rock and roll era, it was barely kicking off, if you can pinpoint any year that rock and roll had a decline in popularity it is 1980-present. When disco, and rap hit the scene...
and 4th. American pie is a very crude, but funny.

  5. okay okay okay. I don't think you heard the whole thing. "American Pie".yeah.pat is right.
a man who was supposed to be on the plane gave up his seat to someone else and jokinly said "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes" and boom. Dead. Later a song was written on an album dedicated to Buddy Holly although the song never directly says names. It was basically the end of an era. Don McLean first learned of the crash whilst folding newspapers to deliver Feb. 3, 1959.

There. All the information is on wikipedia (whether you choose to believe it or not). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died

  6. to start my rebuttle. I've read the whole story many a time, this was not just some un-educated post. In fact, as the story goes, Richie Valens and Tommy Allsup flipped a coin to see who would take the last spot, and Richie Valens won the coin toss, although Waylon Jennings was asked by one of the band members that had the flu to give up his seat and to go on the bus. Buddy Holly then said to Jennings "I hope your ol' bus freezes up" which in turn Jennings said "Well I hope your ol' plane crashes" (which it did)
Secondly, that song is a memorial to them, even though it has many references to the death of Buddy Holly, and all that jazz, it also has many, many more references about all the new bands that came after that day. Yes, it was an end of an era, but it wasn't the end of music, that is my big point. Music cannot die.

  7. mmm.... deal. you win. music cannot die. although they did. we can just pretend they were in a club called "the music". and they died. but around the same time they did, jerry lee lewis was creepering and elvis was joining wars and little richard was preaching. so basically all good music died for a while and crap was still around. but then the good stuff came back around and filled our ears and souls with delight.
    end.
